To experience the beauty and serenity first hand, lace up your hiking boots, grab your binoculars and join us on a private journey into the canyon.

Staying with us

Twenty chalets are perched on the brink of the canyon, far enough from each other to ensure guests’ privacy in this peaceful landscape. Interiors are kept cool by dry-packed stone walls and large windows that perfectly frame the scenery. The six double and fourteen twin rooms each have a large walk-in pebble stone shower, as well as a secluded outside shower. Private decks are perfect for enjoying the view or practicing yoga and meditation. The all-round rooftop windows offer a starry view of the night sky while you drift off to sleep. Double rooms can be converted into family rooms offering extra room for two children. With its spacious deck the rim-flow pool is ideal for relaxing and outdoor dining. During winter or cooler evenings, crackling fires warm the interiors. Lunch is served on the deck while breakfast and candlelight dinners are served in the dining area.

Please note that flying a drone in this area is strictly prohibited.

Experiences

The 45,000-hectare Canyon Nature Park is a natural sanctuary for Karoo succulent flora and endemic wildlife. Hiking and cycling trails meander down into the heart of the canyon where permanent water holes and rock pools attract a wide variety of endemic wildlife. Enjoy a massage in the privacy of your room to soothe tired muscles after hiking and exploring the canyon.

Adventures

The best way to experience the enormity and beauty of the canyon, is by hiking through it during the cooler months of the year. From April to September, hiking enthusiasts can enjoy the variety of hiking options accompanied by experienced guides. Delicious meals and refreshing drinks await hikers at the prepared camps every evening. Cycling is a great way to explore the landscape at a faster pace. Fat bikes are well adapted to the rugged environment. A leisurely way to explore the canyon is by car. Scenic drives in the morning or evening offer a glimpse of the natural cycles of this harsh terrain, while full-day drives afford a better understanding of the exceptional area and its inhabitants. Experienced guides will reveal the geological features as you journey into the depths of the canyon. Enjoy a prepared lunch and a dip in one of the rock pools to cool off. A truly unforgettable experience, set against a spectacular backdrop.

Impact

We keep our footprint light and make every effort to conserve the land, its wildlife and flora. Solar power provides the electricity so there is no provision for air conditioning, refrigerators or kettles in the chalets, however fans or a dip in the rim pool will cool you down in summer whilst cracking fires warm the lodge in the winter.

Geology

One of Namibia’s top tourist destinations, the Fish River Canyon is the largest in Africa and second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. Shifting of the tectonic plates caused a rift, and as waters cut through the rock, erosion deepened and widened the canyon, revealing 500 million years of geological history to us.

Situated in the south-western corner of Namibia, the canyon is 160 kilometres long, 27 kilometres wide, and 550 meters at its deepest point. Canyon Nature Park, where the lodge is located, enjoys 75km of river frontage.

A classic hike but with some added comfort

Fish River Lodge offers an alternative to the classic Fish River hike with our Rim to River guided excursion, from April to September. This is a remarkable way to experience this dramatic landscape or alternatively you can cycle our guided and unguided trails throughout the year.

Canyon Nature Park

The Canyon Nature Park is a 45,000-hectare tract of land that provides sanctuary to the wildlife and protected flora with evidence of human habitation from early hunter-gatherers and nomadic herders to mid 20th century sheep farmers. The Fish River Canyon was declared a National Monument in 1968, and a collaboration of partners, including national parks, private landowners and conservation agencies, were engaged in keeping the area pristine.

So, if you like to hike, bike, or just be, book a stay on the edge of eternity.
