Shipwreck Lodge is the only accommodation facility located on the desolate and world-renowned Skeleton Coast, steeped in history. Situated in the far north-west of Namibia, a short distance from the cold Atlantic Ocean, the lodge offers ultimate luxury and unparalleled service to our guests while they explore the mysteries of this coastline.
The history of the Skeleton Coast is harsh and dramatic, and as you traverse these shores, you can imagine why the Portuguese sailors of old dubbed it “The Gates of Hell”. Over a thousand wrecks scatter the coastline, but only a few are visible to us, slowly breaking up or rusting away under the relentless assault of sea mists and saltwater over the years.
Stories abound of the wrecks and their crew and passengers being stranded on these unforgiving shores. From ships to diamond mines, this coastline has a dramatic and colourful history. The bones and carcasses of animals litter the shores, another testament to its unyielding nature.
The wildlife in this uninhabited landscape flourishes despite the harsh conditions. You can hope to see lion, elephant, brown hyena, jackals, gemsbok, and any number of smaller game on excursions. Our guides offer fascinating insights into the lives of these animals as they take you out and about.

This exclusive destination, which opened its doors in June 2018, is considered one of Namibia's most enigmatic places to spend some time. Esteemed guests can anticipate an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in the harsh yet captivating desert surroundings and the breath-taking beauty of these solitary landscapes, steeped in geological history. From the comfort of the restaurant deck, you can delve into the intricate adaptations of the local fauna and flora that have evolved to thrive in these unforgiving conditions.
Constructed in the image of a shipwreck, the main lodge provides utter luxury. The lounge is furnished with comfortable couches, fascinating paintings from local artists, unusual décor inspired by this barren coastline, and quaint games for your amusement. The staff are on hand for any refreshments that might be required, and delicious meals are served in the restaurant area. Afternoon tea and homemade cake are an added delight.
The dining area and lounge, offering unobstructed views of the Skeleton Coast, provide the perfect setting for exceptional meals and convivial conversations with fellow travellers. From the deck, immerse yourself in a surreal sensation of suspended time as the mist rolls in from the ocean, blanketing the dunes in a white veil.
The cabins capture the imagination with their distinctive design, dotting the dunes. With two family cabins and eight twin rooms, each equipped with an ensuite bathroom, you'll find a tranquil retreat in this extraordinary destination. Luxury furnishings, fascinating facts, a coal stove and turn down service each evening complete this fantastical experience. Steeped in history, the Skeleton Coast is known as one of the most inhospitable places in the world, and earned its name from the multitude of ships and other life it has claimed. Littered with wrecked vessels, long-past attempts at habitation, and the bones of animals, this is a feared territory for sailors, pilots, or travellers and should be treated with respect.
It is estimated that there are over 1,000 wrecks along this coastline, and likely a multitude more that historians have not been able to locate and record. A small number are visible either on or from the shore, serving as an eerie reminder of the dangers posed by the regions unforgiving nature.
Over 16,845 square kilometres form the Skeleton Coast National Park, an area closed off and protected for its diverse ecosystems. Admittance to the Park is not granted to any traveller, but only to those on organised tours with experienced guides or guests traveling to Shipwreck Lodge.
